Job Hunting in 2010? Here’s the Outlook for IT

The job market in 2010 is expected to remain challenging, although there will be some pockets of growth. Research conducted for the Robert Half Technology 2010 Salary Guide shows that, while companies continue to operate on lean budgets, many consider IT to be a core function, and some recruiting is taking place.

Among the positions with the best outlooks:

Network administrator: Network administrators are needed to handle increasingly complex technologies, including Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Software as a Service (SaaS).

Information systems security manager: This function is a critical one as firms focus on protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information.

Applications developer and web developer: Developers are valued for their ability to create and improve applications that help businesses control costs and increase efficiencies.

Systems engineer: These professionals are needed to support IT projects by developing and maintaining technical infrastructure, hardware and system software components.

Database developer: Information management can give companies a competitive edge. As a result, there is demand for database developers, particularly those with SQL skills.

Help desk and desktop support: The need for customer and end-user support, combined with relatively high turnover rates in the specialty, contributes to the need for IT professionals in this area.

Companies that are hiring are being very selective. They are looking for IT candidates with well-rounded skill sets, who are able to assume varied responsibilities as the firms needs shift. Technology professionals with a proven record of working in multiple job functions and adapting to change are at an advantage.

Employers also seek applicants with strong communication abilities. As IT departments play an active role in business strategy, it has become imperative that staff be able to collaborate and share information effectively with others throughout the organization.

Companies remain focused on the bottom line and prefer job candidates who have shown that they are able to contribute ideas that save their firms money. Experience helping previous employers operate more efficiently, increase profitability and reduce costs is beneficial.

A number of certifications are in demand. Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) and Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) are particularly sought after. Other useful accreditations include Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Project Management Professional (PMP).

Some firms that are reluctant to hire full-time staff are engaging IT project professionals. Consultants are enabling businesses to keep up with workloads and shifting priorities while reducing the need for layoffs should needs change. Often, project professionals are considered for full-time positions when openings do become available.

The job market may remain challenging for a while, but there still are opportunities out there. Job seekers should emphasize the skills and qualities most in demand by employers in their resumes and when interviewing. This can help applicants make the right impression and stand out from the crowd.
